The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.

Two Romanian men have been jailed for a state-sponsored attack on an Iranian journalist in London. George Stana, 25, and Nandita Badeja, 21, were sentenced at the Old Bailey on Friday for stabbing Pouria Zirati outside his home in Wimbledon in March 2024. Stana received 12 years in prison, and Badeja was given eight years.

The attack was not a random incident. The judge said it was a coordinated attack on behalf of and for the benefit of the Iranian state. The victim, Pouria Zirati, is a newsreader for Iran International, a Persian-language channel that is critical of the Iranian government. He was stabbed three times in the leg as he walked to his car. He survived but suffered lasting mental scars. In a witness statement, he said he now constantly looks over his shoulder, wears hats and sunglasses to hide his identity, and has moved his family abroad for safety.

The court heard that the two men were part of a group that flew from Romania to carry out the attack. There had been earlier incidents of stalking, including two men entering Zirati's home carrying a cricket bat and a hockey stick. The attack happened in broad daylight near the All England Tennis Club. A third suspect remains in Romania and could not be extradited.

Counter-terrorism police said the case was another example of hostile states using criminals as proxies to do their dirty work in the UK. Chief Superintendent Chris Wright said the use of hired criminals by overseas regimes is a significant and increasing trend. He added that police would work to bring offenders to justice and intervene before attacks happen.

The sentencing brings some closure, but questions remain about how many more Iranian state-sponsored operatives may be active in Britain.
