The broadcast reported that NHS workers and a priest are among the Britons missing and feared dead after devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet, with at least 33 Britons among thousands reported missing and more than 600 people known to have died. A UK team had arrived in Kathmandu to assist rescue efforts. Separately, more than 30 families wrote an open letter to the Prime Minister urging that killers convicted of any form of manslaughter not be released early from prison, saying victims should not bear the consequences of the prison overcrowding crisis. In West Sussex, a 41-year-old man died after a large sign fell on him during a Christian festival, with six others taken to hospital and the rest of the event cancelled.

The flash flood on the Tibet-Nepal border continued to cause devastation, with a dam burst on the Tibetan side adding to the threat. More than 500 deaths were confirmed and over 1,500 people remained missing, including 33 British nationals. Families in the UK described agonizing waits for news of their loved ones, with some relatives believed to have been inside an immigration building when the flood hit.

5 News at Lunchtime

Police have not ruled out a link between a crash on the A66 that killed seven people, including two police officers on Saturday, and a fatal house fire a mile away that killed two more people. The local MP said the incidents have left many not feeling safe. Meanwhile, people across England are preparing for flooding after dozens of homes were damaged, with flood warnings issued in the West Midlands and Warwickshire and alerts in place around the Midlands and areas north of London. The RAC advised drivers to take caution as heavy thunderstorms swept in, ahead of what was expected to be the busiest bank holiday travel period in over a decade, with more than 20 million trips anticipated.

The lead story is the devastating flash floods in Nepal and Tibet, which have killed at least 350 people and left more than 1,300 missing, including 33 UK nationals. The floods were triggered by a glacier collapse, and rescue efforts are being supported by international teams. A man from East Sussex is flying to Nepal to search for his wife and other family members who are among the missing.
