Head teachers warn of Ofsted-related tragedy risk despite reforms

Head teachers have told ITV News they fear another tragedy similar to the suicide of Ruth Perry could happen despite recent Ofsted reforms. A new inspection framework was introduced at the beginning of the year, but school leaders say the pressure remains unchanged.

One head teacher, who considered taking his own life after an Ofsted inspection six months ago, said: "There will be another death. There will." He added: "I felt that I'd achieved absolutely nothing here." He described being told that by an inspector in a meeting alone, and wondered how easy it would be for heads to "take one for the team". He predicted that when a second death occurs, the system will have to stop.

The reporter, Stacey Foster, said she had been visiting school leaders across England who contacted her to say they were struggling after recent Ofsted inspections. She received an email from a principal of a secondary school inspected this month, who was sent a list of more than 10 pieces of evidence needed by 8:30 the next day.

Every leader she spoke to mentioned Ruth Perry, who took her own life in 2023. The coroner investigating her death said the tragedy was contributed to by an Ofsted inspection at her school.

Three years later, John Hayes is leaving the profession after his latest Ofsted inspection. He said a member of his senior leadership team cried and had to leave the room. "That was the level of stress we felt. I cried, too, and that caused my deputy who saw that to call the Ofsted emergency helpline."

Ofsted said it was sorry to hear these stories, but the priority is always the education and welfare of children.
