The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.
Two men have been charged under the National Security Act over the incident at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire last month. Mohammed Abdel Karim, 24, is accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service, which counter-terrorism police believe is Iran's. Numan Eskir, also 24, is charged with entering a prohibited place for a purpose prejudicial to the UK, with prosecutors alleging he approached the base on 22 August, more than a month before the main incident. Both are British nationals from London. They appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court and are due at the Old Bailey on 20 November. Six other men remain on police bail.
At the hearing, the court was told that a group of men had been ordered to drive vans loaded with petrol to RAF Fairford by a handler known as Ali, who police believe was operating from abroad on behalf of Iran. One of the group is alleged to have called 999 himself after being warned there was a bomb in a van. The first emergency call came at about 12.45am on Sunday 27 September, before a local farmer also called police after seeing masked men and three vans near the base.
Armed officers arrested five men in the village of Whelford. A 400-metre cordon was set up and about 85 homes were evacuated. Army bomb disposal experts used a robot to examine the vans. Police later said no improvised explosive devices were found, but a quantity of petrol was recovered. The original five, all UK nationals in their 20s from London, were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act and later on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. They were released on police bail with stringent conditions, a decision that drew criticism from President Donald Trump. Police defended the move, saying it had led to faster progress and better evidence.
The investigation has also been shaped by the base's role. RAF Fairford is used by the US Air Force and was used this year for operations against Iran. Tehran has denied involvement, while US officials and later the UK prime minister said there were strong indications that Iran was involved. In a Commons statement, the Prime Minister said it was highly likely the incident was coordinated in Iran and almost certainly directed by the IRGC. The Foreign Secretary summoned Iran's ambassador and the US withdrew its bombers from the base, citing security concerns.
Counter-terrorism police say the case is part of a wider increase in Iran-linked activity. They have described the use of proxies who may know little or nothing about the operation behind them. The investigation continues, with six other men on bail and police saying more lines of inquiry remain open.

Channel Perspectives
What each channel focused on, with key quotes.
Sky News treated the story as a fast-moving national security and counter-terrorism event, leaning on correspondents at the base and in Washington. It led on the Iran link, the US-UK intelligence relationship, Trump's interventions and later the withdrawal of US bombers. Its tone was urgent and security-focused, with rolling updates and some speculative framing about hostile states.
- “Sky News understands that counter-terror police are investigating whether there is a possible Iranian link to a suspected plot to bomb RAF Fairford.”
- “The arrest in the UK was fantastic”
- “all US bombers that were deployed to RAF Fairford have redeployed to their home stations in the United States”
BBC News combined police statements, security analysis and courtroom reporting. It emphasised the cautious official line, the absence of explosives but presence of petrol, the confusion over who called 999, and the wider Iran and proxy threat. Its tone was measured and explanatory, often giving more detail than other channels on the investigation and charges.
- “no improvised explosive devices have been found”
- “We have found a quantity of an accelerant petrol”
- “There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford.”
BBC One West kept the focus local: evacuated residents, the cordon around Whelford, returning home and the strain on people living beside a US airbase. It gave more space to residents' confusion and criticism of communication than to Washington or Westminster. It also tracked the US bomber withdrawal and local policing concerns.
- “It's a little bit confusing. I was sat at work yesterday reading the news and it was all a little bit confusing”
- “There was an air that we are on the perimeter of this. We are in some ways sitting ducks, really.”
- “If everything is in high alert at five o'clock on a Saturday, why did stuff kick off at one or two o'clock in the morning?”
ITV1 pushed the court case and the investigation's twists, including the handler Ali, the petrol-filled vans and the charge under the National Security Act. It also gave weight to Trump's criticism and the political fallout, while returning regularly to residents near the base. Its tone was straight and story-led, with strong use of court and police details.
- “Two British men have appeared in court today charged with national security offences over the incident at RAF Fairford in September”
- “a group of men were ordered to drive vans loaded with petrol to the base by a handler known as Ali”
- “The arrest in the UK was fantastic. Working with Britain, it was an amazing job. We had them under investigation.”
Channel 4 framed the case as a puzzle with geopolitical consequences, asking how the plot was raised, what intelligence existed and why suspects were bailed. It gave clear courtroom detail on the charges and the alleged Iranian handler, while keeping a sceptical eye on official accounts. It also connected the story to the wider risk of proxy operations.
- “Two British men have appeared in court today charged with national security offences over the incident at RAF Fairford in September with one suspected of assisting Iran's intelligence service.”
- “The court heard that a group of men had been tasked to drive to the base with vans containing petrol by a handler known as Ali, who police believe was working for Iran.”
- “five young British men, all Londoners in their early 20s, have now been released on police bail”
5 News offered brisk bulletins and a public-facing account of the confusion, including the farmer's call, the 999 twist and the court charges. It often stressed how puzzling the sequence looked to residents. Its coverage was less analytical than BBC or Channel 4 but clear on the latest legal steps.
- “Five British men have been arrested over an alleged plot to bomb an RAF base in Gloucestershire.”
- “counter-terrorism police have confirmed today that the Foreign Intelligence Service linked with the men is Iran.”
- “one of the five men allegedly called police in the early hours of September the 27th”
GB News treated the story through a critical, opinionated lens, stressing public confusion, Trump's objections to bail and doubts about official explanations. It mixed news updates with presenter commentary and often framed the case as a test of whether the authorities know what they are doing. Its coverage was more confrontational than the mainstream bulletins.
- “No explosive devices were found in the three vans involved in a suspected terror plot targeting RAF Fairford.”
- “a dual British-Iranian national has become the sixth person now arrested in connection with the suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford.”
- “I don't care what they were doing there. I don't care whether they were working for a fuel company. I don't care. Arrest them and do not let them go until you find out 100% what they were doing there.”
