A man has been convicted of causing the deaths of a mother and her four-year-old daughter by encouraging another driver to race along a busy Leeds road during rush hour.
Jaskomel Riot, who was driving a dark BMW, was found guilty of causing the deaths of Justina Houlboy and her daughter Lena. The pair were walking to Little London Primary School on the morning of the crash in 2023 when they were hit by a white Audi driven by Hardeep Bachu.
Bachu had already pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. The court heard how Riot and Bachu weaved in and out of traffic at high speed, with the incident captured on dashcam and on Riot's own phone. Riot filmed the aftermath of the crash, unaware that two people had died, and drove on.
Judge Singh told Riot he should expect to go to prison for a long time. The judge also said he would take into account the impact of Riot's actions on Justina's fiance, Dominic Chepchor, the father of their little girl.
In a statement, Chepchor said: "Every morning she wakes up and I go to work. She says she loves me, have a good day. Now life has been different. The house is empty." He said he will live with the burden of losing the two most important people in his life forever.
Riot and Bachu will be sentenced together in October. The court heard that the two men were side by side minutes before the crash, and that Bachu had boasted about his powerful car.
