The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.

The Prince of Wales has said that awarding a knighthood to Sir Kevin Sinfield was probably the easiest decision anyone has ever had to make. In an interview, he spoke of his personal admiration for the Rugby League star, who has raised more than £13 million for motor neurone disease charities over the last seven years.

Prince William said he and the Princess of Wales had cheered Sir Kevin during his fundraising runs, including surprising him at the finish of one of his most recent marathons. Sir Kevin said there had been some special finishes over the six or seven years of the campaign, but probably none more so than that one.

The prince praised Sir Kevin's leadership and the example he sets. He described it as a proper way of caring, not caring for the sake of it but showing deep caring. He said Sir Kevin's lack of ego was important in a world where everyone wants to show how amazing they are. Sir Kevin, he added, does it quietly and subtly, does not want to be the centre of attention, and still has a huge impact.

The campaign began as a run for Sir Kevin's friend and teammate Rob Burrow. It grew into a wider movement supporting people affected by MND, bringing unity and hope. Prince William said Sir Kevin's ability to bring people together was like glue, binding communities. He added that the more people like Kevin there were in the country, the better.

The knighthood was awarded to Sir Kevin for services to rugby league, rugby union and the MND community. Prince William said no award had ever been more deserved or appreciated.

A programme called Thank You, Sir Kev is available on demand and was due to be broadcast at 8pm.
