The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.

Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least nine people and damaging energy infrastructure. Ukrainian officials said the capital was hit in three waves. Early reports said 16 ballistic missiles and more than 200 drones were used, while later official accounts said 21 ballistic missiles hit Kyiv and the surrounding region. Rescue workers searched a damaged high-rise apartment block where at least two people died and 21 were injured. The death toll later rose, with seven more deaths reported outside the capital and more than 30 people injured in Kyiv.

The attacks hit homes, a retail park, a shopping centre, a metro station, a medical clinic, a school, a water filtration centre and power facilities. A bridge over the Dnipro was damaged, disrupting metro services and traffic. More than 600,000 people were left without power, and many also lost water and heating. Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said a medical centre was hit and six ambulances were damaged. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the main target was energy infrastructure and that Russia had breached an energy ceasefire announced by President Donald Trump.

Zelensky said Ukraine received no early warning from partners for a second day. He wrote that there was 'once again, no early warning from our partners'. Trump denied that the US had stopped sharing intelligence. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later said: 'There's been no pause.' Ukrainian officials disputed that, saying sirens sounded only as missiles arrived. Reports also said Starlink and Starshield services were restricted for devices moving faster than 100 mph, affecting long-range drone missions. Zelensky later said intelligence had been restored and there was an agreement to restore Starshield to full speed, but officials said problems remained.

The strikes came hours after Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff met Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg and said Russia was ready in principle to resume US-mediated talks. Trump said the US was 'maybe close to a deal'. Zelensky called the attack 'demonstrative' and referred sarcastically to 'Russian humanitarians', a reference to Witkoff praising Putin as a humanitarian. Downing Street said it did not recognise that description. Ukrainian officials and analysts said the strikes showed Russia was not serious about peace. Ukraine launched hundreds of drones at Russian targets, and Russia said it shot down more than 800.

Zelensky was due in London for talks with Prime Minister Andy Burnham. The UK said it would accelerate delivery of air-defence missiles and draw up further sanctions. The visit came as Washington faced criticism over easing sanctions on Russian diesel and over reports that Patriot interceptor missiles already paid for by European allies were being held up. In Poland, authorities reopened Cold War bunkers and sent air-attack warnings. Experts said Ukraine's air defences remain exposed and that a ceasefire or talks were unlikely soon.

Channel Perspectives

What each channel focused on, with key quotes.

Rolling coverage led with the strikes and the intelligence-sharing row. It repeatedly returned to the lack of early warning, updated casualty figures and later reported that Ukrainian officials said 21 missiles hit Kyiv in three waves. It also carried expert and diplomatic analysis, including US denials and doubts about Trump's peace claims.

Key Quotes:
  • “once again, no early warning from our partners”
  • “There's been no pause.”
  • “Ukrainian authorities say Russia struck multiple parts of the country overnight with three waves of ballistic missiles, killing at least nine people.”

Focused on the political consequences of the attack for US policy. It highlighted power and water cuts, Starlink restrictions, Patriot interceptor shortages, Trump's easing of Russian diesel sanctions and criticism that Washington is tilting towards Moscow. It used correspondents and a Democratic congressman to question Trump's motives.

Key Quotes:
  • “Putin is now close to achieving his prize, normalization with America, without any concessions on his brutal, years-long war.”
  • “No, there's no good reason for them to do that.”
  • “We're maybe close to a deal for the first time in a long time.”

A short lunchtime bulletin that stuck to the main facts: widespread power cuts, a third night of strikes despite Trump's energy ceasefire claim, and Zelensky's London meeting. It framed the UK visit as a show of support after Washington's diesel deal with Russia.

Key Quotes:
  • “At least 600,000 people in Ukraine have been left without power”
  • “This is the third attack in a row, despite Donald Trump's claim of an energy ceasefire between the countries.”
  • “The PM wants to show British support, particularly after the US struck a diesel deal with Russia.”

Its reporting dwelt on the human cost and the lack of warning in Kyiv. It used vivid resident testimony, reported cluster munitions claims and repeatedly challenged Trump's claim that peace was near. It also gave prominence to Downing Street's rejection of the 'humanitarian' description of Putin.

Key Quotes:
  • “It didn't feel like peace was especially close last night”
  • “This is terrorism terrorism in its purest form”
  • “Number 10 says it doesn't recognize that description adding that the Russian leader has killed thousands of people”

ITV

The evening bulletin led with the scale of the barrage and the damage to energy infrastructure. It then shifted to a long human-interest report on elderly displaced Ukrainians in Kharkiv, with less emphasis on the US intelligence and Starlink disputes.

Key Quotes:
  • “Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles at Kiev and the surrounding region.”
  • “The Russian night-time barrage hit 28 energy facilities, leaving more than half a million people without electricity, heat and running water.”
  • “Russian attacks on civilian areas have taken or shattered the lives of every generation in Ukraine.”

It framed the strikes as a direct rebuff to diplomacy, coming hours after Trump's envoy met Putin. It highlighted Zelensky's 'show-stopping strike' language and widened the lens to European security, including Poland reopening Cold War bunkers and sending air-attack warnings.

Key Quotes:
  • “missiles have struck Kyiv overnight, just hours after talks between Donald Trump's envoy and Vladimir Putin on trying to end the conflict in Ukraine.”
  • “Russia delivered a show-stopping strike.”
  • “Poland is reopening Cold War bunkers and sending out texts warning people about the threat of air attacks.”
