The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with planning a terrorist attack on two mosques in south London, in a case that has prompted increased police patrols in the affected area.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of his age, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on [date] charged with preparation of terrorist acts and racially aggravated damage to property. He denies all charges.

Police said the boy was initially arrested at an address in south London on suspicion of criminal damage to a vehicle. During the investigation, officers discovered a number of what they described as "documents of concern" that led to the terror charges. The alleged plot targeted two places of worship in Sutton.

The Metropolitan Police have increased patrols in the area but said there is no enduring or wider threat to the public. The case comes days after 12 people were arrested in connection with an alleged extreme right-wing terror threat to an Islamic event in Suffolk, and a separate arrest for an alleged assault outside a mosque in Leighton.

The 14-year-old was remanded to a youth detention centre. His next court appearance is scheduled at the Old Bailey on August 21.
