The Full Story
A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story.
A house fire in Middlesbrough that killed a woman and her seven year old niece is being treated as murder. Police have named the victims as 34 year old Natalie McDonald and seven year old Valentina Foster. Another woman remains in a critical condition in hospital. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The fire happened in Grangetown on Wednesday, less than a mile from the scene of a head on crash on the A66 last weekend that killed seven people, including two police officers. Cleveland Police initially said they could not rule out links to organised crime or the crash. But in the past hour detectives have stated they are not linking the house fire to the A66 collision.
The weekend crash, in which a car drove the wrong way on the A66, killed PCs Tom Clough and Matthew Blades, as well as five young men: Michael Cahill, Jacob Matusiak, Makai Saddington, Theo Ray and Coleworthy. Inquests opened today heard both officers died from head and neck injuries. The coroner said the police vehicle had not been directly involved in a pursuit and the pursuit was called off shortly before the crash.
Since the crash, a series of violent incidents has shaken the town. A house was rammed by a car in the early hours of Saturday before the crash. On Thursday, a property was rammed again just after midnight, a few hundred yards from the crash site. A 39 year old man was stabbed with a machete as he sat outside a property later that day. There is no suggestion these incidents are linked to the crash or the fire, but police have not ruled out connections to organised crime.
Extra police officers have been sent to Middlesbrough from across the country. Around 200 officers are now in the area to reassure residents and prevent further disorder. On Thursday evening, a vigil for one of the young men killed in the crash turned into serious disorder, with five vehicles set on fire. No arrests were made.
Local residents expressed fear. One resident said: "You just people, you know, are not safe." MP Anna Turley said there are "parts of our communities that feel lawless at the moment" and called for more support. The Prime Minister has promised additional help.
Police have urged calm and said they will maintain a visible presence. The investigation into the house fire continues, with the two men arrested still in custody.
