The Full Story

A plain summary built from the channels that reported this story. Facts only one channel reported are attributed to it.

Ukrainian soldiers are using drones to deliver food and children's toys to residents of Russian-occupied Oleshky in southern Ukraine, and to airlift pets out of the city. The operation is run at night from a secret location, with soldiers preparing boxes for another round of air drops.

Company commander Sohei of the National Guard's 11th Brigade authorised the use of aid cages after word reached the unit that residents wanted to evacuate their pets. The cages are fixed to drones and flown to Oleshky, a journey of about 15 minutes. In the control room, soldiers monitor the route. Normally they drop their payload and return. This time they must hover while animals are loaded.

During one attempt, a woman opened a cage and removed a box of food. She then brought out three cats and a dog and tried to place them inside. Two cats escaped during the handover. They returned home and were rescued three nights later. One dog and one cat were secured in the cage and flown out. The same crate had earlier carried food aid into the city.

Elsewhere in Oleshky, another cage landed and a dog was put inside. A man waved goodbye as the animal was lifted out. A few hours later the rescued animals were brought to a headquarters, where they were said to be disorientated and dreadfully scared but safe.

The soldiers involved say they dream of liberating Oleshky and freeing everyone trapped inside. For now, the animal rescues are a rare source of happiness in a city where, as one account put it, happiness is in short supply.
