What was reported

Channels reported that Raye won the 2026 Mercury Prize for her album This Music May Contain Hope. BBC NEWS said the award is presented annually to the best music album by UK and Irish artists and that the winner was announced in Newcastle. The judges' comments were reported in different terms: BBC NEWS said they described the album as displaying real imagination and combining old-school Hollywood glamour with kitchen sink realism, while Channel 4 said they praised its real imagination and scope to realise her vision, and that it would serve as a huge inspiration for years to come. BBC NEWS reported that it was the first pop record to win the Mercury Prize since the 1990s and that Raye said backstage she was shaking, jet-lagged, tired and grateful, calling the prize the best birthday present ever. BBC NEWS also reported that the album has 17 tracks, switches between genres including show tunes and jazz, includes tap dancing, and features her grandparents and sisters; Raye said it involved about four orchestras and hundreds of musicians, whom she named in the final track. BBC NEWS reported that the demos and songbooks for the album had been stolen two years earlier and that Raye said the album nearly did not happen. BBC NEWS said she was due to play a one-off show at the Royal Albert Hall that night and referred to her 29th birthday. Channel 4 reported that Raye beat 11 other nominees and said she was grateful to receive the award. 5 reported that her second album came out in March and went straight to number one, that the other nominees included Sir Paul McCartney, Olivia Dean and Jade, and that she won 25,000 pounds.
